May 24th at the Great Blue, Kobe

The Great Blue is a gem. Turn off the beaten track near JR Sannomiya Station and you’ll find this treasure underground - as all gems are wont to be - it’s interior reflecting the colors and moods of the great Luc Besson movie, “Le Grand Bleu.” Ando-San, the amiable owner and pianist, has created a cool jazz getaway - elegant yet relaxed - and it is here that I did my début jazz performance when I first arrived in Kansai, with Ando on the piano.

So it was very nostalgic to have the Great Blue be the venue of my Kobe début with my new band. Susumu Muraji, a great friend, master steelpan player and educator, and no stranger to the Great Blue, was excellent on the steelpan. Tetsuro Aratama was stirling on the bass, Shinsuke Shimatani grooved on his guitar, and Larry Ransome kept up the heat on the drums. It was quite a night.
